African Responsible Tourism Awards

Message from Louise Lynch, Operations Manager for Dyer Island Conservation Trust:

Good afternoon BLUE FUND Team,

As our partners in conservation we would like to share this proud moment with you.

The DICT’s  tourism partner, MARINE DYNAMICS (, won the African Responsible Tourism Award for “BEST IN WILDLIFE CONSERVATION”!

We are very proud to have won this award. This category is awarded to a tourism business or initiative that preserves and carefully manages habitat and wildlife species. The awards were handed out at a special ceremony held on the 16th April at the World Travel Market Africa in Cape Town. This also means we are automatically shortlisted for the World Responsible Tourism Award held in the UK in November at WTM.

Judges' reasons for winning: "Marine Dynamics provide very high quality shark cage diving experiences. They operate in a sector where there is rightly a lot of criticism of current practice. Marine Dynamics are industry leaders, a commercial operation which operates to the highest conservation standards, where every trip has a marine biologist aboard to provide interpretation and collect data for scientific research. An operator that makes a significant contribution to conservation and the local economy.”

We are grateful for all those who see the value in the work we do, and how it supports and makes the Dyer Island Conservation Trust a sustainable operation, not only for the environment, but for the upliftment of our local community through tourism and conservation.

It is only through these valuable partnerships that help create a successful commercial operation that we can focus on the conservation and community work that needs to be done.

Our key work which helped us win this award includes:

  • The endangered African Penguin housing project.

  • Shark population study through fin identification – first published study of its kind in South Africa. Tagging and tracking of great whites to understand their behaviour in relation to environmental parameters.

  • Fishing line bin project addressing marine pollution.

  • The African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary.

This is where the BLUE FUND comes in. THANK YOU for your support of the AFRICAN PENGUIN AND SEABIRD SANCTUARY – your sponsorship of this project helped us to finish this project. Your support, sponsorship and faith in this project made it easier for us to set up, and complete.  The research, rescue, rehabilitate, monitor and conservation of our MARINE BIG 5 – as well as create awareness and educate the thousands of kids we work with every year – has far reaching effects locally, but it goes deeper than this, our conservation and scientific research that will come out of the operations of APSS will have a global effect on the conservation of these species.

Marine Dynamics also sponsored the category Best in Poverty Reduction which was won by our partners Grootbos. Gansbaai was awarded Best Destination for Responsible Tourism and won overall so a great day for us and the area in which we operate.

Kind regards,

Louise Lynch
